Canyon Springs Conservation Benefits

Canyon Springs contains beautiful rolling hills of mixed conifer forest, sage, and seasonal stream courses fed by springs with meadow and riparian habitat, home to numerous wildlife species. By purchasing canyon springs for conservation the land will be permanently protected open space.

Protect critical habitat & Migration Corridor. The beleaguered Loyalton Truckee deer herd traverses this property as part of their migration corridor between upland summer habitat and lower elevation wintering grounds. Preservation of Canyon Springs supports critical habitat linkage, for the Truckee River, Martis Valley, Mount rose wilderness, and Lake Tahoe Basin.

Create public access for responsible and sustainable recreation. With miles and miles of already established trails, our goal with conserving Canyon Springs is to enhance this community asset and create public access for all. Future Stewardship plans include building new trailheads, trails, and signage.

Our partners plan on working with the community to create a stewardship plan to enhance public spaces, habitat restoration, and support responsible recreation. Sustainably built trails will open up new opportunities in a part of our community that is currently under-served for legally accessible outdoor access.

End three decades of controversial development proposals. Canyon Springs has been proposed for numerous developments over the last thirty-four years, with potential negative impacts on the open space and wildlife habitat and traffic, unchecked greenhouse gas emissions, and wildfire risk. Preserving the land as open space prevents sprawl and irresponsible development in a high-severity-fire-danger area.  

Conservation of Canyon Springs will help to further large landscape connectivity and Conservation Goals for MAP and our partners. Canyon Springs creates a link to the Martis Valley, Mount Rose Wilderness Area, and the Lake Tahoe Basin. Our priority land use advocacy campaigns are working to protect 12,000+ acres from the threats of irresponsible development in the Truckee-Tahoe region.
